Islam Spam: Redux

So previously I contacted eDialoguecentre.org about the spam on the #atheist and #atheism hashtags and got precisely nowhere with even getting them to admit it.

I had another conversation recently suggesting we address our complaints to info@edialogue.org which you’re welcome to try, but I don’t hold out much hope of even getting a response.

Anyway, I did a little more digging and with the help of @VorianK on Twitter and some others, discovered that the source of the spam Tweets is a site called islamtweets.com

Now, if this were just people clicking on it to tweet some heartfelt Islamic nonsense, this wouldn’t be a problem. The problem is that these tweets come in great long strings, sometimes hundreds at a time, completely clogging up streams and making any genuine dialogue or discussion virtually impossible. It’s automated and amounts to botnet spamming.

A bit more tracking and I discover that the edialogue facebook page is posting advertisements for the Islamtweets website and that they share servers.

I’m consolidating this data here for my complaints to Twitter Support, the sites and the domain registrars (this is abuse). I encourage you to use this link to do the same.

Some people seem to have been able to manage to block the spam by using a mute filter that mutes by source/application. This works in Janetter, if you find means that work in other Twitter programs (especially Tweetdeck and Plume) let me know in the comments.

UPDATE: This may help users of some other Twitter applications (specifically Tweetdeck).

  2. So I can’t help you about the spam but I’m half Arab and can fill you in on this mentality… You have to think of most Arab in the Arab world as being about 15 years in the past… Remember the days of “forward this to 20 friends in the next 60 seconds”? Yeah… They (I guess I could say we, but I’m not ready to commit to full Arab status) love to forward anything, literally anything, and then if you add religious stuff to the mix! It can’t get more perfect in their eyes… If there is one thing we “Muslim Arabs” love is showing off how much we love Allah :-p I experience this lovely religious spam overload on a daily basis from family…. After a while it becomes white noise… Best of luck and if you manage to get anywhere with it I will forward it to as many people as I know in celebration ;-p jk

  3. I tried to report as much of it as spam as I could, but it got too much to keep up with. Eventually, I started to mute it through my Twitter client, but they create new accounts too fast for that to have any effect. Finally, since most of the tweets are identical, I just copied the first line of every tweet into my ignore filter and that’s at least slowed it to a trickle. Some people were forwarding every single tweet to @support, but apparently, they won’t do anything either. So long as I can see what’s going on without the idiot Muslims spamming the hashtag, I guess I’ll have to be happy with that.

  4. Thanks for this. It’s a really annoying problem. I can follow #atheism and exclude #islam and #Quran to get most of the spam, but it’s obnoxious. I head there were people making mass-user block lists a while back. Maybe that’s a good solution here.
